Celmisia lateralis is an endemic prostrate or scrambling subshrub with branched stems up to 40cm long. It has numerous small narrow green overlapping leaves which are 6-12mm long and 1-1.5mm wide and are green on both surfaces. Flowers occur from November to March on stalks up to 8cm long.
Celmisia lateralis is found naturally only in low alpine areas (1000-1500 masl) of North-West Nelson to North Westland (Paparoa Range) in the South Island. Its habitats are rocky places, grassland, herbfields and fellfields.
