Auckland Island tomtit is a small, flycatching bird (>20 g.) in the robin family. It is one of five subspecies. It is named after New Zealand biologist George Marriner who took part in the 1907 Sub-Antarctic Islands Scientific Expedition.
It has a large head and a short black bill. It has a black head, black back and black wings with a white wing bar. The male is glossier with a trace of yellow on the breast. The bird’s feet are a pale orange colour.
