Poa anceps is a grass endemic to the Three Kings, North and South Islands. On the Westcoast, it is found as far south as George Sound and on the east coast as far south as the Banks Peninsula. Its naturally grows in a variety of habitats including coastal, lowland to subalpine where it grows on cliffs where it hangs down, forest scrub and grasslands. It is more prevalent in coastal areas of warmer parts of New Zealand and is absent from New Zealand's southernmost regions.
P. anceps is variable species of grass within the wild with coarse, light green to greenish brown to bluish green stiff erect or hanging leaves. The leaves have a prominent thickened midrib and numerous distinct lateral ribs. The flowering stalk is about the same height as the leaves.The plant can reach a height of 70cm.
