Superfamily: Tettigonioidea
Family: Tettigoniidae
Genus: Caedicia
Species: C. simplex
Scientific name: Caedicia simplex,
Common name: Pink Katydid
Caedicia simplex is normally a bright green, the pink-red colour of this rare coloured katydid is the result of a genetic mutation known as erythrism, similar to the recessive genes that cause pigment disorders that afflicts albino animals. The Audubon Insectarium in New Orleans is now breeding and hatching little pink katydids.
This is a nymph which looks like smaller versions of an adult. The bright red colour of the nymph will gradually diminish at the next moult.
