Juncus lomatophyllus is a perennial, tufted, leafy rush that can grow >74 cm tall and it is endemic to SE Africa. In New Zealand, Juncus lomatophyllus inhabits damp areas and is widespread and locally abundant in northern Westland.The broad leaves (6-15 mm wide) are flattened often with a pink base. They tapering gradually from the wide base to a small fine point, bluish-green in colour and are occasionally reddish-tinged near margins and tips; the sheaths are red. The young leafy shoots are attached at the base to creeping stems.Flowering occurs during summer with branched flower heads made up of 3 to 12 clusters of dark-brown to black flowers that develop into seed capsules.
