Celmisia dallii is endemic to the western side of the South Island but is mostly present in the mountains of North-West Nelson extending south to about Westport. It grows in montane to subalpine areas. It is now sold by specialist nurseries. Tufted pseudostems bear glabrous, olive-green, leathery, oblong leaves about 12 X 4cm, with cream to orange edges. The undersides are a satin cream to orange colour. The leaves have small teeth along the slightly upturned margins.
During November to February, a 4cm flowerhead appears on a 25cm stem. The seeds are dispersed by wind.
