Zearagytodes maculifer is a small (2-3 mm) endemic winged beetle that congregates, lives and feeds on the Ganoderma species of polypore mushrooms (bracket fungi) that grow on wood. The can gather in large groups. Ganoderma produces perennial sporocarps (fruiting bodies) that provide food (spores) and habitats for this beetle. Since the feeding beetles use only a minute percentage of spores that is discharged from the fungi hymenial surface they virtually have no effect on the fungi.
