The species Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae is divided into 4 subspecies.
Red-crowned parakeet, C. novaezelandiae novaezelandiae found on the Three Kings Islands south to the Auckland Islands including the Antipodes Islands:
Chatham red-crowned parakeet, C. novaezelandiae chathamensis
Kermadec red-crowned parakeet, C. novaezelandiae cyanurus
Macquarie parakeet, C. novaezelandiae erythrotis: New DNA analysis is required to determine the correct status of the Macquarie parakeets, as the specimens used in Boon, Kearvell et al. (2001) were not correctly authenticated.

This parrot is characterised by its bright emerald green plumage and a crimson forehead and fore-crown and having a stripe of crimson behind the eyes. The leading edge of the wing is a cyan blue. It has a length of >28 cm and a weight >80 g.
