A common robust moss with glossy leaves which are plicate.
It is common in roadside ditches, at the base of damp banks or in boggy ground where it forms yellow brown patches. It grows to a height of 100mm and 10mm wide.
The male flowers form conspicuous brown discs at the end of the branches.
