Tapinella panuoides is a saprobic mushroom that grows alone or gregariously on the dead wood of conifers. It grows during summer and autumn but also over winter in warmer climates. The brown/orange cap (2-12cm) has a rough surface at first but becomes smooth with age. The caps margin is inrolled at first. The orangish gills become crimped or corrugated near the base. It lacks a stem or has only a short lateral extension attaching the cap to the wood.
