Astelia graminea has fine arching grass-like foliage and forms clumps 30–40 cm across. Astelia graminea is endemic to the alpine grasslands of Marlborough and Nelson. It is the smallest of the herbfield Astelia species and is especially common among the carpet grass (Chionochloa australis). 
The narrow, leathery, brownish leaves are 15–50 cm long. 
Flowering occurs in January. The male flowers are maroon, the female one is greenish. In March.–April bright orange fruits develop.
