Gahnia pauciflora is a native tufted, bright green to yellow-green perennial sedge of New Zealand. It is found throughout the North Island and top of the South Island of New Zealand. In coastal to montane areas up to 800 m.a.s.l.
Flowering occurs September to January and it can carry nuts (fruits) throughout the year. The dangling orange-brown (sometimes yellow cream) nuts have a black apex.
Gahnia pauciflora is a host and food plant for the rare forest ringlet butterfly (Dodonidia helmsii)
