Thamnochortus rigidus is a rush-like flowering plant native to South Africa and is endemic to Eastern and Western Capes. It is a clump-forming dioecious, caespitose, evergreen perennial growing to 80 cm tall. It is culms are velvety, stout and rigid. The fertile culms often have sterile foliage at the nodes. It can stand temperatures down to -8 ° C
