Hymenophyllum villosum is a terrestrial or epiphytic fern with long creeping rhizomes and it grows in montane to subalpine forests and subalpine scrub. It is endemic to the North, South, Stewart, Chatham, Campbell and Auckland Islands of New Zealand.
