Catalpa x erubescens is a hybrid between Catalpa ovata (Yellow Catalpa) and Ccatalpa bignonioides (Indian Bean Tree ) originating in Indiana.
This deciduous tree tree can become tall with a spreading dome. It can have a trunk up to 1 m diameter, with brown to gray bark maturing into hard plates or ridges.
In early spring it produces blackish-purple foliage which turn green in summer. The leaves are opposite (or whorled), large, heart shaped, >30 cm long and >20 cm broad. It flowers in New Plymouth during December and January.The fruits are long bean-like seed pods appearing in summer and lastuntil they drop in winter and early spring.
