Guppies need warm water and are popular aquarium fish. In New Zealand, they are restricted to geothermal waters near Reporoa, Bay Of Plenty, in the central North Island. They may have been introduced as early as the 1920s. They are now naturalised.
Guppies closely resemble gambusia (Gambusia affinis) and are small – females grow to 6 centimetres and males to 3 centimetres. Guppies mature just a few weeks after being born. Like many livebearers, the female guppy can use sperm from one copulation to produce several broods of young.
