Kingdom: Fungi
Division: Basidiomycota
Class: Agaricomycetes
Order: Agaricales
Family: Agaricaceae
Genus: Lepiota or Leucoagaricus.
Lepiota or Leucoagaricus species cannot be separated macroscopically. New Zealand has at least ten times as many Leucoagaricus species as Lepiota and nearly all of them without names. Microscopically they are distinguished by Lepiota generally having clamp connections (a structure formed by growing hyphal cells of certain fungi) and Leucoagaricus are without.
The Leucoagaricus genus contains approximately 90 species while there are 400 species of Lepiotacurrently recognized worldwide.
